Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, resided a shepherd boy. His life was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to care for his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind across the solo tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day in day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
But, there were occasional moments of solitude, when here the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a few days more. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
